My dad graduated from medical school in 1961, embracing his family doctor identity with the
advent of the Medical Care Act. As a new physician, he was engrossed in mastering his craft
and supporting his growing family, with little awareness of how government policies would
shape his practice.
By the time I finished high school, my dad’s passion for medicine had waned. Through his
career he delivered babies and bad news, responded to crises, talked farming and rashes with
the people who came to love him. Volume-driven, fee-for-service practice conflicted with his
values. His own chronic conditions curbed his relentless work ethic. His only advice when I
started university was, “Don’t go into healthcare.”
25 years later, I reached a career milestone, a promotion, a $150M budget and a seat at the
executive table. This came with all the trappings one would expect in health care – an avalanche
of daily crises, counter wisdom political in reach, and friendly advice to keep my head down.
The pandemic added another layer of stress. The gift: I felt like I walked into a brick wall, and
hit my head sufficiently hard to awake to the question, why am I doing this?
Pain signals the need for change. While many of us avoid or numb it, pain can be a wake-up
call. It whispers, “It’s time to take the leap”. When the discomfort of staying in our groove
outweighs the fear of leaving it, we’re ready for transformation. Endings lead to recovery and
transition and pave the way for new beginnings.
My new beginning is launching the Ignite Leadership Collective. I am passionate about the
importance of health and the amazing people who care in its many forms. The Ignite Leadership
Collective is a dynamic virtual community dedicated to empowering healthcare leaders. Our
